3 Questions to Help You Set Achievable Goals

Now that we’re starting a new year, most people may start creating New Year’s resolutions, deciding what they want to change in their lives. These resolutions could also be what they want to add to their lives this new year, like organization, perhaps. This can be very refreshing, and the new year can oftentimes feel like an opportunity for a fresh start. So, let’s think, what do you want for yourself and your life in the next year or so? Since very wish or resolution needs a plan to turn it into a goal, let’s look at ways to set actionable goals!

Goal Setting + Organization

What does goal setting have to do with decluttering and organization, anyway? Well, much more than you’d think! Humans are very social creatures, who love quality time with people and even pets. Oftentimes, we find ourselves wanting to create spaces for connections with our loved ones, whether it be a movie or just to talk. This can become very difficult when clutter is in your spaces. Decluttered and organized areas create the perfect environment to enjoy social time with out the stress of your to-do list hanging over you. And, setting goals are how you take the steps you need to create the life you want! Let’s look at building those goals!

Breaking It Down

It’s great to dream big when you think of all the things you wish to accomplish this New Year. Once you have your big goals thought out, let’s look at how to break them down into smaller, specific, and achievable steps. Make sure to plan out the specific details of your big goals to build and guide your smaller steps. The specifics could be about how much time you plan to contribute to these smaller goals on a frequent basis, or what tools you’ll need to make it happen.

Here is an example of outlining the specifics about a big goal:

  • What do I want?
    • I want to have family and friends over for dinner more often
  • What would it look like to have people over more often?
    • I would feel more connected to my friends and family
    • I would make a larger meal when they came over
    • I would make sure my house is tidy enough that I can relax while people are here
  • What challenges get in my way?
    • I have other activities and obligations that fill my calendar
    • I am busy and tired from work
    • I have house projects that need doing
  • My goals
    • Spend a few minutes each night putting things away around the house while I’m brushing my teeth
    • Invite people over for a potluck once per month

Your smaller steps for this goal could be:

  • Put a reminder note in my bathroom to pick up around the house each night
  • Make a list of available dates to host for the next three months
